The mahjong group on Tuesday mornings was the first thing that made me feel at home. I had worried it would feel awkward at first, but the host β a very calm woman β made it easy. After a couple of weeks I knew everyone's name. My room is comfortable and I sleep well here, which I did not always do before.

My mother has been in the Cultural Studio programme since March and the change in her is noticeable. She now talks about calligraphy the way she used to talk about cooking when she was younger β with genuine enthusiasm. The team answer our questions promptly. I feel like I know what is happening there, which matters a great deal to me.

The food is the thing I mention to my son every time. It tastes like proper cooking β not canteen food. The congee they make on cool mornings is genuinely good. I did find the first month quiet, adjusting to a new place at my age takes time, but by the second month I had found my rhythm. The garden helps. I sit there most afternoons.

We looked at several options before choosing sze-look. What decided it for my father was that it felt like a home, not a facility. The hallways do not smell of disinfectant, the staff say hello by name, and there is always something going on. He has been there six months and says he does not feel his age in quite the same way as before.

I am not a resident β I live nearby and join the studio sessions on a monthly plan. The calligraphy class on Thursday afternoons is run by someone who takes the craft seriously, and that makes the sessions worthwhile. I have learned more in four months than I expected. The room is pleasant and never rushed. I could do without the traffic noise getting there but that is Caine Road for you.

I had not played mahjong properly in years. My wife used to play with me and I had stopped after she passed. Coming here and finding a regular circle changed something. I am not saying it fixed anything β but it put me back among people, and that matters. The monthly cost for everything is honest and straightforward, which I appreciated.

Three Journeys, in More Detail
A closer look at how different residents and family situations found their way to sze-look and what followed.
Story 01
From a Quiet Flat in Sham Shui Po to a Social Morning in Mid-Levels
The Situation
Mrs Lam's children live in Canada and Singapore. After her husband's passing, she found herself spending most of her time alone in a two-room flat. Friends from her younger years had mostly moved or were in diminished health. Her family wanted something more than a television for her company.
What Happened
Mrs Lam joined the Companion Circles plan first β her daughter called ahead to explain her situation, and the host made a point of seating her next to a resident with a similar background. She began the full residence plan three months later, after deciding the commute from Sham Shui Po made less sense than simply being there.
After Eight Months
Mrs Lam is now one of the regulars at the Tuesday circle and takes part in the monthly storytelling session. Her family reports that phone calls home are longer and livelier than they were before. She has also taken up calligraphy, which she describes as "surprisingly absorbing."
"I did not expect to feel settled so quickly. People here have lived, and they are happy to share it." β Mrs Lam
Story 02
A Retired Teacher Who Wanted Something to Do With His Hands Again
The Situation
Mr Chan had taught mathematics at a secondary school in Kowloon for thirty-one years. After retirement he found the unstructured time difficult to fill. He was healthy and had no particular social problems β he simply missed having purposeful occupation and the company of people who were doing something together.
What Happened
He signed up for the Cultural Studio as a monthly non-resident member, primarily for the calligraphy class. Within two months he was also attending the Cantonese opera listening sessions, which he had not expected to enjoy. He is now a resident and says the Cultural Studio was what he needed to realise he had more interests than he thought.
After One Year
Mr Chan has become an informal helper to newer studio participants, showing them brushwork technique with the patience of an old teacher. The studio lead describes him as one of the most consistent participants and a steadying presence for others who are new to practice.
"I came here for the calligraphy. I stayed for everything else." β Mr Chan
